This week the “band” I’ve selected is just a duo, and they rarely play together, but the music they make is so incredible it has to be shared. Chick Corea is one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, and Gary Burton is hand down THE greatest vibraphone player to ever pick up a mallet. Their landmark 1972 album, Crystal Silence, and 1978 album, Duet, are simply incredible.
Chick is a master songwriter and performer, who manages to achieve a sound from the piano that is distinctively his own. Gary plays things on the vibraphone that seem nearly impossible for anyone else to replicate, and there’s a reason why their collaboration has lasted 38 years and led to 6 Grammy awards. Even if you’re not a fan of jazz, the musicality they display has to be admired, and I encourage you to check out this video of them performing La Fiesta in 2007 to see and hear for yourself.
